Today we commemorate 52 years since the official opening of the Seychelles International Airport by the late Queen Elizabeth II. On this day, we are reminded of the bold and audacious step taken by those who came before us. They had a vision to connect Seychelles to the world which completely transformed our economy.
The gateway to Seychelles is manned on a 24-hour basis by an entire community of dedicated men and women, providing thousands of opportunities for Seychelles and its people. Since its opening in 1972, our airport has seen over 13 million passengers, an impressive feat for a small group of islands with a population just over 100,000 people.
Structurally, the airport has undergone tremendous transformations over the years, from its architecture, the range of facilities and services, the airport has now become an exciting place to be. It continues to expand as demand increases and the needs of the market changes.
The transformation continues to this day, with a focus on meeting operational needs, safety and security requirements and an elevated customer experience. The ongoing work to develop a new Airport Masterplan will ensure a sustainable and modern airport model for the future, an icon which will continue to sustain the tourism industry.
The Seychelles Civil Aviation Authority, as custodian of this important establishment remain steadfast and reaffirms its commitment to safeguard and uphold the pride of Seychelles. SCAA will ensure that it continues to meet the expectations of our stakeholders through collaborations and meticulous planning.
The key themes for the airport in its development are:
- Safety and Security first
- Innovation and modernization
- 5 Star level of service
- Business focus and financial sustainability
- People centric
- Environmental protection
As we celebrate our 52nd anniversary, I express my heartfelt gratitude to all of the hardworking individuals of the civil aviation community. Your sacrifices, efforts, determination, and your relentless contributions are the reasons why we have such a vibrant airport ecosystem on our small island.
May we continue to inspire, connect, and uplift communities for generations to come.
